Portrait vs. Headshot

A portrait and a headshot share a lot of similarities. Sometimes the only real difference is that the portrait includes a little more of your torso than the headshot does. Other times the difference is far more clear, such as with a full body portrait. How much of your body a portrait includes just depends upon how you intend to use the image and the feeling that you want it to convey.

Because a business portrait shows more of you than just a business headshot does, the business portrait allows for a little more personality to shine through than what is possible with a typical business headshot. This helps to establish a more intimate connection to you for your clients and potential clients.

Much the same as a typical business headshot, my business portraits are typically shot in the studio so that I can take advantage of studio lighting to establish the mood and message in your image that you are trying to convey.

You should think carefully about the look you wear to your portrait session. A look is a complete wardrobe. The outfit you wear should help to convey the impression you want your portrait to convey. For example, lighter colors, frills, etc. will come across as friendly and approachable, whereas dark solid colors present a more stern and commanding impression.

Makeup should be applied the same to perhaps just a tiny bit heavier than normal. This is because the camera does not pick up makeup in the same way that the human eye does, and because makeup can sometime become somewhat muted in the post processing of your images.
